How to convert PDF to Word

  2. The text is read page by page. Lines are joined into paragraphs and large text becomes a heading.

What to expect from this converter

This tool is built for privacy and speed, not for pixel-perfect layout. Other converters upload your file to a server and rebuild the page. This one reads the file on your own device, so it can only work with what the file contains in plain form.

Word to PDF: the text, headings, lists, tables and embedded pictures are carried over. Headers, footers, text boxes, page borders and some fonts are not, and the page breaks may fall in different places than in Word. Only .docx is supported. An old .doc file must first be saved as .docx in Word.

PDF to Word: you get the text, grouped into paragraphs, with larger text turned into headings and a page break between pages. Images, tables, columns and exact fonts are not rebuilt. A PDF made from a scan or a photo has no text inside it, so nothing can be read from it without OCR. This tool does not do OCR.

Is it private?

Yes. The file is opened by JavaScript running in your browser tab and is not sent to ConvertsFiles. What your browser does download from the internet are the open-source helper libraries (mammoth, PDF.js and docx), and each one loads only when you use the matching tab. You can confirm this in your browser network tab. There is no sign-up and no watermark. The only limit is your device memory, so very large files can be slow on a phone.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a free PDF to Word converter?

Yes. This one is free, needs no account and adds no watermark. It extracts the text of a PDF into an editable DOCX file.

How do I convert a Word document to PDF for free?

If you have Word, use File, Save As and choose PDF. If not, upload your .docx here, check the preview and press Save as PDF.

Can I convert PDF to Word without losing formatting?

Not fully with this tool. It keeps the text, paragraphs and headings, but not images, tables or exact fonts. For an exact layout, open the PDF directly in Microsoft Word.

Can I convert a scanned PDF to Word?

Not here, because a scan is a picture without text. You need OCR. Convert the pages to images first, then use an image to text tool.

Is it safe to convert confidential files?

The conversion happens in your browser and the file is not uploaded to our servers, which is safer than a converter that sends files to the cloud.

Does it work on a phone?

Yes, in modern mobile browsers. Saving a PDF uses the print dialog, which is available in Chrome on Android and in Safari on iPhone through the share and print options.

Does it support old .doc files?

No. Only .docx is supported. Open a .doc file in Word and save it as .docx first.

Is there a file size limit?

We set no limit. Large files use more memory, so a long PDF may be slow or fail on a low-memory phone.
